Name: Garpenberg mine.

Location: The mine is located in Hedemora municipality, Dalarna County, Sweden.

Controlling Company: Boliden Group.

Brief Description: Garpenberg is one of the world’s most modern mines. It is also Sweden’s oldest mining area still in operation. Garpenberg’s has an estimated 25-year mine life.

Brief History: Boliden has owned the Garpenberg mine since 1957. In 2011 the company decided to invest SKr3.9-billion to expand the operation to increase production to 25-million tonnes a year.

Products: The mine extracts zinc, lead, silver, copper and gold.

Geology/Mineralisation: The Bergslagen district deposits date back to the middle precambrian but may have been remobilised later. The polymetallic mineralisation is complex, with varying amounts and proportions of zinc, lead, copper and precious metals. The Garpenberg North orebody is regarded as a zinc deposit with silver and lead.

Reserves: Total proven reserves as at December 31, 2017, were estimated at 21.9-million tonnes grading 0.24 g/t gold, 109 g/t silver, 0.04%,  3.6% zinc and 1.4% lead. Total probable reserves were estimated at 55.8-million tonnes grading 0.34 g/t gold, 96 g/t silver, 0.05% copper 2.9% zinc and 1.4% lead.

Resources: Total measured resources as at December 31, 2017, were an estimated 5.7-million tonnes 0.29 g/t gold, 99 g/t silver, 0.06% copper, 3.7% zinc and 1.7% lead.

Mining Method: Underground, using sublevel stoping. Other mining methods include cut-and-fill mining, rill mining and residual mining of sill pillars

Major Infrastructure and Equipment: The mine includes rock and personnel shafts, ore and personnel hoists, a 68 m headframe, a ventilation facility, two crushing stations, an above-ground storage facility, a concentrator, a primary mill, flotation units, five pressure air filters and ore concentrate silos.
