PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Iron-ore major Fortescue Metals has taken further steps to meet its zero operational emissions target by 2040, appointing hydrogen mobility and clean energy company Hyzon Motors to deploy hydrogen fuel cell powered coaches at the Christmas Creek operation, in the Pilbara.

The vehicles will be a direct replacement of traditional diesel coaches, Hyzon said on Monday, with the fleet expected at the mine site by mid-2021.

“Fortescue’s history of developing and adopting innovation and technology has been key to achieving our industry-leading cost position and we are applying this technology-first strategy to our hydrogen initiatives to ensure we remain at the forefront of this emerging industry,” said deputy CEO Julie Shuttleworth.

"Fortescue’s mobile fleet represents around 400-million to 450-million litres of diesel consumption per year and presents a significant opportunity for hydrogen to be used as a replacement fuel source to accelerate emissions reduction and diversify our energy mix.”

The agreement with Fortescue marks Hyzon’s entry into the Australian mining sector.
