Finnish mining equipment manufacturer and construction chemicals sup- plier Normet last month opened an office in South Africa, to better service its Southern African clients and provide a greater selection of its products.

A number of its lifters and underground logistics vehicles use hydraulic technology in order to lift personnel or heavy materials, such as earth and rubble, making it ideally suited to the mining industry.

One such product is the Utilift MF 540 scissor lift with a lifting capacity of up to 4.5 t. “It was designed to provide a safe work platform for all kinds of installation work in tun- nels up to 6.5 m high,” the company states.

Typical applications, which can be accomplished safely, efficiently and comfortably from the level work deck, elevated to optimum work height, are fan installations, ventilation ducting, electrification works and piping for air and water services. Four platform sizes, with side shifts, provide complete drift coverage from a single setup in many kinds of mine headings.

Further, optional remote drive systems from the deck allow for greater efficiency into installation and assembly works in underground mines. The Tier 3-classified engine provides clean and efficient operation. The falling-objects-protective-structure- (Fops-) and rollover-protection-structure- (Rops-) certified safety canopy and/or cabin allows for increased visibility for the driver and his assistant.

All daily checks and service functions can be done from the ground level.

Normet also offers a mobile mechanised scaling system, namely the Scamec 2000.

The Scamec 2000 has evolved from successful scaler experience, hours of research and engineering work, and partnerships with mining and tunnelling companies around the world.

“The Scamec 2000 scaler family comes in three interchangeable boom versions to provide optimum boom reach and coverage to fit the actual dimensions of the underground space, which helps reduce the need for repositioning and thereby reducing downtime,” the company notes.

The Scamec range can be equipped with a hydraulic impact hammer for scaling in hard rock or with a pick unit for primary scaling in soft and stratified rock, and for secondary scaling in all underground excavations.

Scaling is the process whereby loose materials, such as rock, are taken down from the roof of a mine or tunnel.

Another product offering from Normet is the Utimec 6250 CR with 4.5 t maximum payload, which is used for material transportation in underground mines and tunnels where tramming heights are 2.3 m or more.

It is equipped with a 25 kNm hydraulic crane, which reaches up to 5.8 m and has a slew of 330° to help with the loading and unloading of materials.
The liquid-cooled, turbo-charged Deutz 96 kW or Daimler 90 kW Tier 3-classified engine options provide clean and efficient operation. Maximum speed in a horizontal tunnel is 25 km/h.

The Fops- and Rops-cerified safety canopy and/or cabin on the Utimec 6250 CR provides superior visibility and a comfortable compartment for the driver and his assistant. The enclosed cabin provides noise levels less than 75 dB.

Variomec Series
Normet’s Variomec MF 060 D dumper is part of the company’s M-series Variomec system and is typically used in tunnelling projects with small or medium-sized tunnel cross sections. The Variomec LF 090 D, part of the heavy-duty L-series Variomec-system, is also typically used in tunnelling projects with small- or medium-sized tunnel cross sections.

The modular Variomec concept uses an articulated carrier and interchangeable work modules such as a remixer kit for concrete transport, a dump kit for rock hauling and a boom lift kit for man lifting. As these kits are fitted to the carrier using standardised connections, any application can be converted to another in a few hours.

Further, the Variomec MF 060 D dumper has a maximum 10 t payload, with a dump box capacity of 6 m3, a tipping angle of 85° and a maximum tipping height of 3.7 m3. The dump box also features a hatch, which can be opened when the box is empty. This provides good visibility when reversing. The other kits, the 4.4 m3 mixer kit and the 9 m lift kit can be delivered as additional equipment.

Like the Utimec 6250 CR, the Variomec MF 060 D has a maximum horizontal speed tunnel of 25 km/h and uses a liquid-cooled turbocharged Deutz 120 kW or MB 110 kW Tier 3-classified engine.

The ergonomic driver’s seat and Fops- and Rops-certified safety cabin provide greater visibility as well as a comfortable compartment for the driver and his assistant. The enclosed cabin provides noise level less than 75 dB, much like the Utimec 6250 CR.

The fully reversible four-wheel- drive system with high traction capability ensures safe and sure movement in difficult ground conditions and the hydraulic dual-circuit oil-immersed multi-disc brakes allow for safe driving and braking.

The maximum payload capacity of the Variomec LF 090 D is 16 t, with a dump box capacity of 9 m3 and a tipping angle on the box of 65°. The maximum height during tipping is 4.4 m.

The dump box features a hatch that can be opened when the box is empty, which allows for improved visibility when reversing.

The machine’s liquid-cooled turbocharged Deutz 155 kW or MB 170 kW Tier 3-classified engine option provides clean and efficient operation and has a maximum horizontal speed of 18 km/h.
