The announcement that Gill Marcus would be stepping down as South Africa’s first woman governor of the South African Reserve Bank came as a surprise and was also associated with a fall in the rand. The reason? Marcus was seen to be doing a good job, having used her term to improve the level of societal engagement, as well as the clarity of the bank’s communication. Hopefully, both important traditions will be sustained.
