Africa-focused miner Endeavour Mining on Tuesday reported that its employees who tested positive for Covid-19 had fully recovered, that its operations were continuing at normal levels and that its CEO would donate a third of his salary to efforts helping to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

In a media statement on its Covid-19 response, Endeavour said that each of its operations in Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Mali were continuing to operate at normal levels with gold shipments and sales continuing, albeit with increased health and safety measures designed to prevent the spread of the virus.

The operations were continuing to manage and respond to Covid-19 within the framework of the company’s incident management and response plan, which was being monitored by an epidemiologist special adviser to Endeavour.

Endeavour noted that since the onset of the pandemic, governments in the region had acted decisively to implement appropriate response measures, leveraging their recent experience with the Ebola epidemic.

To bolster these efforts, Endeavour has been supporting the national response in close collaboration with the health authorities in its host countries. The miner’s first response was to mobilise and send to West Africa an expert medical response team.

The miner has also provided essential supplies and services to communities in which it operates and said that it would continue to do so for the duration of the pandemic.

Further, president and CEO Sébastien de Montessus would donate 30% of his base salary, and members of the leadership team and the board of directors had also volunteered to donate a portion of their salaries or fees for the next three months. Endeavour would match these funds, resulting in a total donation of about $1-million.

The funds would be deployed by Endeavour’s community relations and medical teams to source much needed medical equipment for local community health centres and to also provide financial support to families and schools that have been impacted by a loss of income resulting from Covid-19. These donations, combined with the amount already spent at the mines and supporting national and local efforts in Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Mali would bring Endeavour’s total contribution to $6-million.
