ELB Construction (Pty) Ltd (ELBCON) is pleased to announce it has been awarded the project to install 4x Leach Vats, as well as associated structural steel for Turnmill Proquip Equipment (Pty) Ltd at Glencore’s Rhovan Mine Operations at Bethanie outside Brits in the North West province.

Glencore’s Rhovan Mine Operations‘ aged leach vats were becoming obsolete and therefore decided on the construction of new vats, which will allow for the old vats to be decommissioned.

“ELBCON approached Turnmill to offer our services as subcontractor to undertake the erection portion of the project, offering a solution that would alleviate the risk. Instead of welding the large vats on site, ELBCON would install them on site piece large”, says Mike Meijers, Project Manager ELBCON.

ELBCON scope of work includes the skid jacking, installation, alignment and torqueing of 4x 40m long, 260t free issue completely assembled leach vats. Further, all structural steel installation for the leach vats, as well as walkways and hand-railing will be installed and grouted by ELBCON.

Access roads within the plant to be sufficient to take all loads and turning circles required for delivery to be adequate (one vat is approximately 260tons + weight of trailer; Axel load of 2,3t per wheel and 3,38t/m2).

These vats will be installed in sequence, therefore the erection strategy is closely aligned with the logistics strategy in as much as it will be one of sequential and continuous delivery and erection.

ELB Construction’s portion of the construction works is set to take six months, beginning in mid-May 2019. Their scope of the work has increased with the addition for the construction of the new leach vat’s associated new winch structures and quench building. This will be executed concurrently with the construction of the vat project.
