World Bank programme leader Catriona Purfield said at the release of the eighth edition of the bank’s biannual ‘South Africa Economic Update’ that the deterioration in South Africa’s growth outlook over the past few months had been rapid and warned that the country might not even meet the bank’s revised growth forecast of 0.8% for 2016 and might slip into recession. The World Bank, which has lowered its 2016 price forecast for 37 of the 46 commodities it monitors, has warned that low prices for oil and other commodities, including iron-ore, are likely to endure for some time.
