Silicosis, that silent killer of mineworkers, may at last be facing its own demise. A promising new real-time dust monitoring system is described as the closest the industry has come to a silver bullet to put an end to the curse of silicosis and other lung diseases. Impala Platinum CEO and programme sponsor Terence Goodlace is seen at last week’s Chamber of Mines launch, where he disclosed that the new system allows for immediate intervention when undesirable concentrations of dust are evident, which has the potential to slash exposure levels to many times below the legal occupational limit. Continuous monitors at dust sources are subjected to engineering controls and then enabled by programmable logic controllers to communicate with control rooms, where unacceptably high levels of dust or emissions become subject to immediate preventive response.
