VANCOUVER (miningweekly.com) – Canadian diamond producer Dominion Diamond Corp on Monday said a move to relocate its head office from Yellowknife, in the Northwest Territories (NWT), to Calgary, Alberta, is expected to save C$19-million a year once fully implemented.

Despite costing about 100 jobs in the NWT, the project is expected to be completed by mid-year 2017, without interruption to ongoing operations at the flagship Ekati mine and the development of the Jay pipe project.

“Although this was not an easy decision, it is necessary to support the long-term strength and viability of our operations. The Ekati mine is a pillar of the NWT economy, and this cost-reduction effort will allow us to continue to provide northern employment opportunities and benefits well into the future,” said CEO Brendan Bell.

Dominion stated that most of the workforce, including the majority of its northern Aboriginal employees, will continue to be employed in the NWT and it will maintain an office in Yellowknife for certain key positions.
