Cone crusher enhances operations at Eastern Cape quarry

Crushing and screening company Pilot Crushtec International’s Pilot Modular/Trio MC90 cone crusher has improved crushing efficiency levels and saved costs at the Ugie Mac sand, gravel and stone quarry, in the Eastern Cape, says Pilot Crushtec national sales manager Nicolan Govender.

The cone crusher was delivered to the quarry, situated between the towns of Ugie and Maclear, in December 2013, and is currently operating in combination with the Ugie Mac quarry’s other machines, producing high-quality material at a rate of up to 90 t/h.

“The customer was looking for a cost-effective method of producing small quantities of 13 mm and 19 mm stone, and less than 8 mm dust, for concrete applications,” explains Govender.

He notes that the quarry’s use of contractors was proving to be a costly exercise, but that the volumes required by Ugie Mac’s clients did not justify the purchase of a mobile cone crusher.

Therefore, Govender and his team suggested integrating a modular skid-mounted cone crusher with Ugie Mac quarry’s existing mobile jaw crusher and screen.

“We found that adding the Pilot Modular/Trio MC90 and two Pilot Modular conveyors – a 12 m MC800 and a 4 m MC800 – provided an efficient and affordable answer to the quarry’s problem. An added bonus is that these products are always available in stock, so we were able to deliver the products to the company immediately,” he says.

Govender points out that the quarry’s existing jaw crusher feeds material into the mobile screen and that oversize material is processed by the newly installed cone crusher which, in turn, feeds product back to the screen.

Ugie Mac quarry director Jason Kashula says he is impressed not only with the performance of the company’s latest acquisition but also with the experience of dealing with Pilot Crushtec International.

“Until recently, stone crushing and screening had not played a major role in our business, but we bought a jaw crusher back in 2010, followed by a screen. Pilot Crushtec International’s after-sales service and support were excellent, and when we needed advice moving forward, we did not think of talking to anyone else,” says Kashula, who believes that the region offers additional growth potential.

“Many new developments are being planned for the region and we are looking to establish new quarrying sites in the Transkei, which is another good reason to buy the Pilot Crushtec MC90. As it is skid-mounted, it is easy to transport to different locations, which helps keep our options open,” states Kashula.

The Ugie Mac quarry, which was founded in 1974, is well established in the region and has about 50 permanent employees. The company is also active in quarrying, plant hire, civil engineering and construction.
