Company to optimise gold mine’s water treatment plant
Water management company Veolia has been appointed to optimise, operate and maintain the water treatment plant of gold major AngloGold Ashanti’s Iduapriem gold mine, in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem municipality of the western region of Ghana, over the next two years.
“This contract that will be handled by Veolia Ghana, confirms the company’s leading expertise in the treatment of water used in the mining industry and our capacity to attract new clients in the key fields of mine development.
“Water is key in the mining industry and is used within a broad range of activities including mineral processing, dust suppression, slurry transport and employee needs,” the company says.
Veolia Africa and Middle East executive VP Patrice Fonlladosa emphasises that the company will use its management and operational expertise to ensure proper water treatment and discharge at the mine.
“Veolia’s global presence and strong commitment to the mining industry and Africa has given AngloGold Ashanti the confidence to outsource its water management to Veolia.
“This contract confirms the added-value solutions and expertise that our group provides to its mining clients so that their processes can comply with the highest standards, in particular the environment, while improving the efficiency of their operations,” he explains.
Iduapriem Mine
Iduapriem mine is an openpit gold mine with average gold production of about 220 000 oz/y and a recovery factor of about 95.8%.
The mine faces a climate with extreme seasonal variations in temperature, rainfall and the alternation of dry and wet seasons. With these extreme seasonal patterns, water management requires caution, to avoid flooding of operations, water contamination and potential health and safety issues, Fonlladosa explains.
Further, gold extraction at the plant uses cyanide, a hazardous material used to dissolve and separate gold from ore. Veolia’s water management strategy includes caring for the proper operation and maintenance of the treatment plant, to ensure that water resources are managed adequately in an environmental-friendly manner.
Veolia group boasts a staff complement of more than 187 000 employees worldwide. The company designs and provides water, waste and energy management solutions that contribute to the sustainable development of communities and industries.
