The pace of coloured gemstone mining is quickening in several parts of the world, including Colombia, where this picture shows mineworkers extracting emeralds at Mineria Texas Colombia Puerto Arturo, in Muzo. In April, Canada-listed Fura Gems restarted coloured gemstone mining at Coscuez mine, in Colombia’s mountainous Boyacá region. Coloured gemstone mining is also under way in Mozambique and Sri Lanka, at a time when the Natural Resource Governance Institute expects the market for coloured gemstones to grow to $10-billion in the next ten years, from the current $2-billion.
