The opencast Brakfontein coal mine, above, near Delmas, in Mpumalanga, is owned and operated by Tegeta Exploration & Resources. The mine, which has been supplying coal to Eskom since March, has a contract to provide 100 000 t of coal a month to the State electricity company. An extension to the mine, which is due to come on stream later this year, will see more supply to the power generation utility, also at the rate of 100 000 t a month.
