People shout slogans during a protest over the death of two brothers while working clandestinely 80 m below surface in an abandoned underground coal mine in Jerada, a Moroccan city that has been dependent on coal mining since the 1920s. State coal mines employed thousands until rising operational costs and falling coal prices resulted in official closure in the 1990s. However, since then, an estimated 3 000 residents have continued to mine secretly and the death of the brothers sparked their fury, with main street marchers demanding an end to perceived State neglect, as well as an upsurge in job opportunities.
