Name: Climax and Henderson mines.

Location: The Climax mine is located about 20 km north-east of Leadville, Colorado, in the US.

The Henderson mine is located about 67 km west of Denver, Colorado.

Controlling Company: Climax Molybdenum Company, a subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan.

Brief Description: Climax and Henderson are molybdenum mines, with Henderson being the largest primary producer of molybdenum in the world.

Freeport operates the Climax and Henderon mines in a flexible manner to meet market requirements.

Brief History: The Climax mine was placed on care and maintenance by its previous owner in 1995. It restarted operations in 2012.

The Henderson mine has been in operation since 1976.

Products: The Henderson and Climax mines produce high-purity, chemical-grade molybdenum concentrate, which is typically further processed into value-added molybdenum chemical products.

Geology/Mineralisation: Climax and Henderson are porphyry molybdenum deposits with molybdenite as the primary sulphide mineral.

Reserves: Total proven and probable reserves at the Climax mine as at December 31, 2017, were estimated at 160-million metric tons grading 0.15% molybdenum.

Total proven and probable reserves at the Henderson mine as at December 31, 2017, were estimated at 74-million metric tons grading 0.17% molybdenum.

Mining Method: Climax is an openpit mine, while Henderson mine uses block cave underground mining techniques.

Major Infrastructure and Equipment: The Climax mine includes a 25 000 t/d mill facility.

The Henderson mine operation feeds a 32 000 t/d concentrator.

The world’s longest conveyor of its kind connects the Henderson mine and mill – a 24 km elevated belt passes underneath the Continental Divide through an old train tunnel and then above ground to the mill.

Most of the molybdenum concentrate is produced at the Henderson mine and shipped to Freeport’s Fort Madison, Iowa, processing facility.

Prospects: In response to market conditions, the Henderson molybdenum mine continues to operate at reduced rates.
