Mining and electricity are joined at the hip. Regrettably, a public-sector power monopoly has been allowed to drag down a vital private-sector- led industry. Now there is an opportunity to shed the monopoly and free up that vital industry to be competitive. With the help of the sun and the wind, South Africa’s vital minerals-energy complex can be made competitive once more. Moreover, that clean renewable energy can turn water into hydrogen, and that hydrogen, with the help of locally mined platinum, can be turned into electricity to drive vehicles into a new decarbonised era. One Cabinet Minister now leads both mining and energy, which makes the jobs-rich, lower-cost transition all the more programmable. Of great benefit is that hydrogen can be stored and put back into the electricity grid on demand. South Africa thus has the complete solution to the world’s mega emissions problem.
