PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Thailand’s Department of Primary Industries and Mines has approved the reopening of the Chatree gold mine.

Owner Kingsgate Consolidated said on Friday that its Thai subsidiary, Akara Resources, will now start work on the full commissioning of the second plant, including using stockpiled ore already on the run-of-mine pad, and start the rehandle contract to process the stockpiled ore.

Work to ramp up the second plant to full capacity will also be undertaken, while Akara has started the initial refurbishment on the first plant.

“It’s a truly remarkable moment to see Chatree open again. We have always believed that having the mine operate again is the best possible outcome, and I would like to personally thank all our loyal staff who have worked so hard to make this happen and all our loyal shareholders who have stuck with us through thick and thin over the past six years,” said Kingsgate executive chairperson Ross Smyth-Kirk.

Kingsgate was forced to place its Chatree gold miner on care and maintenance at the start of 2017, after the Thai government in 2016 announced that all gold mining in the country would cease.
