PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed Kalium Lakes’ mining proposal and mine closure plan for its Beyondie sulphate of potash (SoP) project, in Western Australia, has been approved by the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, allowing the company to start early works at the project site.

The approval comes after the Environmental Protection Authority in May this year backed the minor and preliminary works planned at the site.

With the approvals now in place, Kalium Lakes could now start with site access road upgrades, as well as upgrades to the accommodation camp, workshop and communication towers.

“The approval of the mining proposal and grant of our initial mining tenure requirements ensures that we are able to undertake the early works construction activities this calendar year, while the remaining approvals for the Beyondie SoP project are processed,” said Kalium Lakes MD Brett Hazelden.

Beyondie is expected to produce 150 000 t/y SoP, with the option to incrementally phase the project through a ramp-up from 75 000 t/y to 150 000 t/y SoP to minimise operational and financial risks.

The project is expected to cost some A$220-million to develop.
