Name: Arcata mine.
Location: Arcata is located in the Department of Arequipa, in southern Peru.
Controlling Company: Hochschild Mining.
Brief Description: Arcata is an underground operation situated on 47 000 ha and 4 600 m above sea level.
Brief History: Hochschild started developing and preparing the Arcata mine in 1961 and the first concentrate was poured in 1964.
Products: Silver and gold.
Geology/Mineralisation: The Arcata mine is conformed by vein systems where the epithermal vein deposits are of an intermediate sulphidation type, with predominant silver values and variable quantities of gold and base metals. The main structures at Arcata are Mariana NE, Blanca, Amparo, Ramal Leslie, Alexia and Marion, which extend for 29 km.
Reserves: Total proven and probable reserves as at December 31, 2017, were estimated at 857 717 t grading 357 g/t silver and 1.1 g/t gold.
Resources: Total measured and indicated resources as at December 31, 2017, were estimated at 3.1-million tonnes grading 394 g/t silver and 1.25 g/t gold. Inferred mineral resources were estimated at 4.13-million tonnes grading 334 g/t silver and 1.24 g/t gold.
Mining Method: Arcata is mined using conventional and mechanised (trackless) cut-and-fill breast or overhand stoping methods using timber support.
Major Infrastructure and Equipment: The Arcata concentrator produces silver/gold bulk concentrate by flotation. The plant has the capacity to treat 1.75-million tons a day.
Prospects: Hochschild has undertaken an intensive campaign to explore for resources at Arcata using the concentrator plant’s significant spare capacity.
