Free trade is under attack and antitrade winds are blowing across the global economy. First, there was the surprise Brexit vote, followed by the stunning victory of populist Donald Trump in last year’s US elections. Both events point to growing scepticism about the virtues of free trade and globalisation. Whether the forces of protectionism turn gale force in 2017 could well hinge on how the Trump administration approaches trade issues in the coming few months.
