Global aircraft charter specialist Chapman Freeborn has, as of June 20, added new air freighter routes to assist the expanding African mining industry.

“The new service will run every Thursday from OR Tambo International Airport, in Johannesburg, stopping over at Lubumbashi International Airport, in the south-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and N’Djili International Airport, in the DRC’s capital city of Kinshasa, using a DC8-73F passenger commercial jet airliner,” Chapman Freeborn Africa operations manager Heinz Lange tells Mining Weekly.

He adds that the company also introduced chartered flights in September 2012 using a Fokker F27 freighter aircraft, which is based at Entebbe International Airport, in Uganda.

“Chapman Freeborn also offers scheduled freighter flights for the mines to Mwanza Airport, in northern Tanzania, and scheduled supplying flights to locations such as Mogadi- shu, in Somalia, Bunia, in the eastern DRC, South Sudan and Mozambique,” says Lange.

He states that the company is assisting the mining industry by establishing more structured scheduled routes and services in key, emerging mining locations on the continent.

“Chapman Freeborn also has extensive experience in offering specialised tailor-made charter services for heavy and abnormal-size mining equipment, oil and gas equipment, high-value commodities, dangerous goods and crew rotations, as well as on-board courier services,” Lange asserts.

Further, the company analyses routes, payloads and timescales to assist in proposing the most suitable aircraft for the transportation of mining goods and services, he says.

Established in 1973, Chapman Freeborn has four decades of experience in providing specialised air charter solutions for outsized and time-critical cargo.
The company makes available reliable and cost-effective cargo charter solutions to a diverse client base of international freight forwarders, logistics providers, shippers, governments and humanitarian relief organisations.

“With more than 30 offices strategically located worldwide, Chapman Freeborn’s multi- lingual air charter experts are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” Lange adds.

He further points out that, to date, the company has been awarded the World Cargo award for six consecutive years and the 2013/14 biannual Stat Trade Times International Air Charter Provider of the Year Award for the African region.

In May, Chapman Freeborn cargo sales manager Patricia Monethi told Mining Weekly that Africa was difficult to operate in owing to the various regulations specific to each country and a lack of road infrastructure.

She said that the company had overcome these challenges by employing recognised agents or representatives on the ground for each African region.

“These agents can inform us of specific legal requirements and infrastructure challenges, which helps us choose the best air charter solution for our clients,” Monethi explained.

Further, Lange says that, owing to Chapman Freeborn’s buying power and strong partnerships with carriers in various locations, it can overcome most challenges.

“Chapman Freeborn’s goal is to build solid partnerships in the mining sector. The company aims to further develop solutions for the mining, engineering, procurement and construction sectors, and to be the service provider of choice for the mining industry in Africa – that is our ultimate aim,” concludes Lange.
