Why security companies are rethinking operational strategy in the age of AI
This article has been supplied.
South Africa’s security sector is entering a period of rapid operational change. Artificial intelligence, digital compliance systems, remote monitoring, biometrics, and integrated infrastructure are shifting the industry beyond traditional guarding and surveillance models.
For many security companies, the challenge is no longer access to technology. It is understanding how to apply these systems effectively in real operational environments while balancing compliance, cost pressures, skills shortages, and growing client expectations.
At the same time, businesses are under increasing pressure to improve visibility across sites, respond faster to incidents, reduce operational inefficiencies, and modernise reporting structures. This is particularly relevant as digital compliance requirements continue to reshape the private security environment in South Africa.
These shifts form the backdrop to the Securex Seminar Theatre programme, presented in partnership with SMART Security Solutions, at Securex South Africa 2026. Taking place from 2 to 4 June at Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg alongside A-OSH EXPO, Facilities Management Expo, Firexpo, and RE+ South Africa, the co-located platform brings together security, safety, facilities, fire protection, and energy professionals within one operational environment.
Visitors can move directly from seminar discussions into live demonstrations, supplier engagement, and practical technology evaluation across the exhibition floor. This allows security professionals to compare solutions, engage with specialists, and better understand how operational technologies function in real-world environments before making investment decisions.
According to Mark Anderson, Portfolio Director at Montgomery Group Africa, the pace of technological change is now forcing security businesses to rethink operational strategy rather than simply upgrading equipment.
“Security technology is moving rapidly, but many businesses are still trying to understand how these systems apply in practice. The conversation is shifting away from standalone products towards integrated operational ecosystems that improve visibility, response, and decision-making,” he says.
Artificial intelligence is one of the clearest examples of this transition. While AI-driven analytics, facial recognition, edge AI, and automated monitoring tools continue to gain traction, many organisations are still navigating questions around implementation, governance, ethics, and operational value.
Concurrently, pressure surrounding compliance and reporting is increasing. Digital infrastructure is steadily replacing paper-based systems, particularly as security companies face greater scrutiny around operational records, incident reporting, and regulatory accountability. These broader industry pressures are reflected in the Securex Seminar Theatre programme, which focuses heavily on operational application rather than theoretical discussion.

The programme moves beyond product discussions into wider operational and strategic concerns. Sessions exploring governance in artificial intelligence, ethical standards in the private security sector, biometrics, and integrated operational ecosystems reflect growing demand for systems that improve visibility and decision-making while supporting long-term operational resilience.
The relevance of these conversations extends well beyond traditional security applications. Security systems are increasingly expected to integrate with facilities management, fire protection, occupational safety, and energy infrastructure, particularly as organisations pursue greater operational visibility across increasingly complex environments.
This convergence is one of the reasons the co-located platform continues to attract strong interest from across the broader operational ecosystem.
“The value of the seminar theatre is that it moves the conversation beyond theory. Visitors can hear directly from specialists dealing with these issues in operational environments every day, while also seeing how these technologies fit into broader business infrastructure,” says Anderson.
For businesses trying to understand how these shifts will affect long-term operations, the seminar programme and wider exhibition environment provide practical insight into the technologies, strategies, and operational thinking reshaping the security sector in South Africa.
