A new development is the introduction of a range of flameproof pad-mounted motors, predominately for the coal-mining segment.
“These motors are an extension to the well-proven and SABS/Government Mining Engineer-certified explosion-protected motors for Zone 1 hazardous areas and are immediately available for supply from 0,75 kW to 45 kW,” states Chryssoulis.
WEG’s flameproof range has been further extended with the launch of an explosionproof brake motor featuring an integral brake within the flameproof enclosure.
“We have quite a few significant references in mine ventilation projects, the most recent being the supply of 15 various fan motors ranging from 55 kW to 450 kW for the new Xstrata Wonderkop project, worth some R800 000,” says Chryssoulis.
Other projects include the Black Mountain mine in Aggeneys where three 1 350-kW ten-pole 6 600-V main ventilation fan motors were supplied.
The company also supplied to Sasol Syferfontein in Secunda, where two 750-kW ten-pole 3 300-V underground ventilation fan motors were supplied.
In Black Rock mine in Hotazel, three 460-kW eight-pole 3 300-V auxiliary ventilation fan motors have been supplied, as well as one 600-kW and one 700-kW four-pole, 400-V fan drives for Tubatse Ferrochrome in Steelpoort.
Chryssoulis says that a number of motors larger than 160 kW have been supplied for variable- speed drive fan applications, and, apart from featuring WEG’s advanced insulation systems, motors of this design are fitted with insulated bearings and a shaft grounding brush to obviate bearing damage resulting from shaft currents.
When these types of motors are installed in a classified hazardous area, an earthing strap is used in place of the shaft grounding brush. WEG’s cast-iron range of pad-mounted motors are extensively used for driving in-line fans in the mine ventilation industry.
The range, which has been supplied for many years, covers motors from 0,75-kW to 75-kW output, and is fitted with either a ball bearing or a roller bearing at the drive end, depending on the customer’s speci-fication.
The motors are available with up to IP66 degree of protection.
The 75-kW model was introduced about a year ago and has been very well received by the market.
