End-users have experienced a marked increase in prices, as well as a decline in service levels from traditional suppliers in the machine protection market, says machine monitoring solutions com- pany Engineering Dynamics (ED) MD Christo van der Walt.
Van der Walt says the company’s range of machine failure prevention products for control and instrumentation engineers, including vibration sensors and transmitters, as well as cabling solutions for monitoring and protection systems, aims to remedy the marked increase in price and the decline in service levels.
He says that ED is constantly growing and that it has not experienced a decline in business during the current economic downturn.
“In fact, previous clients have returned to ED after burning their fingers with unreliable condition monitoring service providers,” says Van der Walt.
Van der Walt says that more and more companies are implementing on-line condition monitoring systems to communicate vibration and temperature levels to the control systems.
He says that the main drivers for online monitoring systems are safety and the need to have real-time condition information to ensure production demands are met.
“Other typical applications include temporary monitoring of machines with intermittent problems without installing cumbersome infrastructure, as well as conducting trials on product performance over a few months using a GSM [global system for mobile] inter- face and the Internet,” says Van der Walt.
ED distributes a range of battery- or mains-powered wireless measurement units. The units provide wireless multichannel vibration and other measurements using standard wireless or GSM networks.
“The company is excited about wireless technology as it reduces the need to run long cables. This further enhances the possibility of remote data acquisition and analysis by a specialist using the Internet,” says Van der Walt.
In addition to the company’s online vibration monitoring, the supply of cost-effective sensors and cables has been a good growth area for ED over the past year.
Van der Walt says that the company’s inno- vation in the field of vibration sensors and transmitters, as well as cabling solutions and monitoring and protection systems, sets it apart from the competition. He adds that ED has a positive outlook for the rest of the year and predicts further company growth in 2010.
