JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Diversified miner Exxaro is undertaking an environmental-impact assessment and public participation process for its proposed 1 200 MW coal-fired power station, near Lephalale, in Limpopo.
The group, which would establish the power station in two phases of 600 MW each, appointed Savannah Environmental to complete the task.
The proposed site, 17 km north-west of Lephalale, was located near the Grootegeluk coal mine and the Matimba and Medupi power stations. A broader study area of about 55 km2 is being considered within which the facility is to be constructed.
The Onbelyk 257, Gelykebult 455, Eendrachtspan 451, Gelykbult 450 and Vooruit 449 farms were being considered.
The power station was expected to make use of either conventional pulverised coal or circulating fluidised bed boiler technology, depending on the quality of the coal used.
The generated power would be directed into the electricity grid at a point still to be determined with State power utility Eskom.
