Mainly used for the transportation of bullion and diamonds, these vehicles’ ballistic standards are generally rated at B4+.
“Vehicles of this rating are able to withstand the fire from an AK 47 assault rifle, about 10 m away and travelling at a speed of about 710 m/s,” says African Exports Unlimited export sales director John Brelsford.
Mambas – ex-South African National Defence Force (SANDF) ten-seater personnel and bullion carriers – were recently delivered to gold-miners in Tanzania.
It was also delivered to other diamond-mining groups in West Africa, and as standard, these vehicles are landmine resistant.
The estimated cost of the vehicles, is in the region of about R700 000, depending on options.
“We have a 100% success rate with our vehicles. Mambas and armoured Toyotas have been supplied to clients in Tanzania and other countries which often bear the brunt of hijackings and robberies of wages, bullion and assets. To date, however, there has not been a single successful heist,” claims Brelsford.
Quite a few of these vehicles have been sold in the last years.
Armoured Toyota Double Cabs were also delivered to a gold-producer in Tanzania last month.
The vehicles are imported new from Japan or Australia ‘in-bond’ – no tax or custom duties – armoured in Johannesburg, then exported to various destinations around the world.
“All Armox steel is imported from Scandinavia and fitted onto the vehicles with ballistic glass by a specialist armouring company, producing some of the highest-quality workmanship in the world,” says Brelsford.
The vehicles are rated at B4 + or B6+ and prices start at about R300 000 for an armoured B4+ level Toyota Double Cab 4
