West Virginia

West Virginia is a state in the Appalachian region of the United States. Its capital and largest city is Charleston. The state's economy has historically been dominated by coal mining, natural gas extraction and heavy industry, making it one of the most energy-intensive states in the nation. West Virginia is a leading producer of coal, particularly metallurgical coal used in steelmaking, and has substantial natural gas reserves in the Marcellus and Utica shale formations. Major cities include Charleston, Huntington and Morgantown. The state's mountainous terrain and resource base have shaped its industrial character, with mining, chemicals and energy generation forming the backbone of employment. West Virginia is governed as a state within the federal system of the United States, with a governor and bicameral legislature. Its economic fortunes have been closely tied to energy markets and federal energy policy, with ongoing debates over the transition to renewable energy and the future of fossil fuel industries. The state was admitted to the Union in 1863, having separated from Virginia during the American Civil War.
