Welkom

Welkom is a city in the Free State province of South Africa. It is located in the Lejweleputswa District Municipality, approximately 160 kilometres north-east of Bloemfontein, the provincial capital. The city has a population of around 70 000 within its municipal boundaries, with a broader metropolitan area exceeding 200 000 residents. Welkom was established in 1947 following the discovery of gold in the region, and its name means "welcome" in Afrikaans. The city became the centre of the Free State goldfields, which form part of the Witwatersrand Basin, and grew rapidly during the mid-twentieth century as mining operations expanded. Gold mining remains a significant economic activity, though the sector has contracted since its peak, leading to economic diversification efforts. The city also serves as a regional commercial and service hub for surrounding mining towns including Virginia and Theunissen. In recent years, Welkom and the broader Free State region have attracted interest for helium and natural gas exploration, with projects such as the Virginia Gas Project drawing investment. The city's economy continues to evolve as it balances its mining heritage with emerging opportunities in energy and related industries.
