Volkswagen

Volkswagen is a German automotive manufacturer and one of the world's largest car producers by volume. The company is headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany, and operates manufacturing facilities and sales networks across six continents. Volkswagen is the flagship brand of the Volkswagen Group, which also owns Audi, Porsche, SEAT, Škoda and other marques. The company produces a wide range of passenger vehicles, from compact cars to SUVs, with popular models including the Golf, Polo, Tiguan and Passat. Volkswagen has a significant presence in South Africa, where it has manufactured vehicles since 1951 at its Kariega (formerly Uitenhage) plant in the Eastern Cape. The South African operation produces the Polo and Polo Vivo for both domestic and export markets. Volkswagen competes in the South African market against brands such as Toyota, BMW, Suzuki and Chinese manufacturers including Chery, GWM and Jetour. The company's sales performance in South Africa is tracked by naamsa, the automotive business council. Volkswagen was founded in 1937 and rose to global prominence with the iconic Beetle, which became one of the best-selling cars in history.
