Tongaat Hulett

Tongaat Hulett is a South African agribusiness company focused on sugar production and land development. The company is headquartered in KwaZulu-Natal and operates sugar mills and cane-growing operations primarily in South Africa, with historical interests in other southern African countries. Tongaat Hulett produces raw and refined sugar for domestic and export markets, and also manufactures sugar-based products including molasses and biofuels feedstock. The company owns significant land holdings in KwaZulu-Natal and has pursued property development alongside its core agricultural operations. Tongaat Hulett is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and has been a major employer in rural KwaZulu-Natal for decades. The company has faced financial difficulties in recent years, including accounting irregularities and debt restructuring, which led to significant corporate governance changes and asset disposals. Tongaat Hulett works closely with independent cane growers who supply a substantial portion of the cane crushed at its mills. The company plays a central role in South Africa's sugar industry and is a key stakeholder in policy debates around trade protection, biofuels mandates and industry sustainability. Tongaat Hulett was founded in 1892 through the merger of the Tongaat Sugar Company and Hulett's Refineries, and has evolved from a sugar refiner into an integrated agribusiness with diversified interests.
