Thunder Bay

Thunder Bay is a city in Ontario, Canada, situated on the north-western shore of Lake Superior. It serves as the administrative centre of the Thunder Bay District and is the largest city in north-western Ontario, with a population of approximately 110 000 in the urban area. The city is a major transportation and logistics hub, home to one of Canada's busiest ports on the Great Lakes, handling grain, coal and general cargo. Thunder Bay's economy has historically been anchored by forestry, mining and transportation, though it has diversified in recent decades to include education, healthcare and emerging sectors. The region is strategically positioned within Ontario's critical minerals corridor, with proximity to deposits of lithium, graphite and other minerals essential to battery production and the energy transition. The city hosts research and development facilities focused on mining innovation and clean technology, supported by Lakehead University and federal programmes. Thunder Bay's port and rail connections provide logistical advantages for moving bulk commodities to southern markets and overseas. The city was formed in 1970 through the amalgamation of the twin cities of Fort William and Port Arthur, along with surrounding municipalities, and has since evolved into a regional economic anchor for northern Ontario.
