Swakopmund

Swakopmund is a coastal city in western Namibia and the capital of the Erongo region. Located approximately 350 km west of the national capital Windhoek, it sits on the Atlantic Ocean coast where the Swakop River reaches the sea. The city has a population of around 44 000 people and serves as Namibia's premier beach resort and second-largest population centre. Swakopmund is known for its German colonial architecture, a legacy of its founding in 1892 as the main harbour for German South West Africa. The city's economy is driven by tourism, mining support services, and light manufacturing. Its proximity to the Namib Desert and coastal location make it a hub for adventure tourism and a gateway to the uranium mining belt in the Erongo region. Major uranium operations, including the Husab mine operated by Swakop Uranium, rely on infrastructure and services based in and around the city. Water supply to Swakopmund and surrounding mining operations is managed by NamWater, with desalination playing an increasingly important role given the arid climate. The city's port facilities and transport links support both the local fishing industry and the export of minerals. Swakopmund remains a key economic centre for Namibia's western coastal zone, balancing tourism, resource extraction, and regional administration.
