Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is a subregion of Asia comprising eleven countries that lie between the Indian subcontinent and China, extending from the eastern Indian Ocean to the western Pacific Ocean. The region includes Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. It covers approximately 4.5-million square kilometres and is home to more than 680-million people, making it one of the most densely populated regions in the world. The region's economy is characterised by rapid industrialisation, growing manufacturing sectors, expanding services industries and significant natural resource endowments including oil, gas, tin, rubber and palm oil. Southeast Asia has emerged as a major hub for electronics manufacturing, automotive production and increasingly for data centre development driven by digital economy growth. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), founded in 1967, serves as the principal regional bloc promoting economic integration, political cooperation and cultural exchange among member states. Infrastructure development, including electricity grids, ports and transport networks, remains a priority as countries seek to support economic expansion and urbanisation. The region is experiencing rising electricity demand linked to industrialisation, electrification initiatives and the growth of energy-intensive sectors such as data centres and electric vehicle manufacturing. Southeast Asia's strategic location along major shipping routes and its role as a manufacturing base for global supply chains underpin its economic and geopolitical significance.
