Slovakia

Slovakia is a landlocked country in Central Europe. The capital is Bratislava. With a population of about 5.5-million, Slovakia has a diversified economy that includes automotive manufacturing, electronics, machinery and metals production. The country's currency is the euro, which it adopted in 2009. Slovakia operates as a parliamentary republic and is a member of the European Union, the Eurozone, NATO, the Schengen Area and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. Key exports include vehicles, machinery, electrical equipment and iron and steel products. The mining sector contributes to the economy, with resources including magnesite, copper, lead, zinc and small-scale gold deposits. Slovakia's industrial base benefits from its central European location and integration into regional supply chains. The country gained independence on January 1, 1993, following the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
