Scrap Metal

Scrap metal is discarded or waste metal material that retains economic value and can be recovered, processed and recycled for reuse in manufacturing. The industry encompasses the collection, sorting, processing and trading of ferrous metals such as steel and iron, as well as nonferrous metals including copper, aluminium, brass, stainless steel and precious metals. Scrap metal arises from multiple sources: end-of-life vehicles, demolished buildings and infrastructure, manufacturing offcuts and turnings, obsolete machinery and equipment, electronic waste, and discarded consumer goods. The sector plays a critical role in the circular economy by diverting material from landfill, reducing the energy and emissions intensity of primary metal production, and conserving finite mineral resources. Processing typically involves collection, sorting by metal type and grade, shredding or cutting, magnetic and eddy-current separation, and melting or refining to produce feedstock for mills and foundries. Major consumers include steelmakers, aluminium smelters, copper refineries and manufacturers of wire, pipe, sheet and castings. Scrap metal prices fluctuate with commodity markets, demand from construction and automotive sectors, and the availability of primary ores. The industry is served by a network of scrapyards, metal merchants, shredding facilities and specialist recyclers, ranging from small local operators to multinational trading houses. Regulatory frameworks govern the handling, transport and export of scrap to prevent theft, ensure environmental compliance and manage the flow of strategic materials. Technological advances in sorting, sensor-based separation and urban mining are expanding recovery rates and the range of metals economically recyclable from complex waste streams.
