Richards Bay Minerals

Richards Bay Minerals is a South African mining company that extracts and processes heavy mineral sands, primarily titanium dioxide feedstocks and pig iron. The company operates one of the world's largest mineral sands operations, with mining activities concentrated along the eastern coast of South Africa in KwaZulu-Natal. Richards Bay Minerals is a joint venture between Rio Tinto, which holds a majority stake, and a consortium of black economic empowerment partners under South Africa's Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) framework. Its core products include ilmenite, rutile and zircon, which are used in pigments, ceramics and other industrial applications. The company's processing facilities are located near the port of Richards Bay, enabling efficient export of its products to global markets. Richards Bay Minerals is a significant employer in the region and plays an important role in South Africa's mining sector. The company has increasingly focused on decarbonisation initiatives, including partnerships with independent power producers to secure renewable energy through electricity wheeling arrangements. It was established in the 1970s as part of efforts to develop South Africa's mineral sands resources and has since grown into a major global supplier of titanium feedstocks.
