Richards Bay Coal Terminal

Richards Bay Coal Terminal is a coal export facility located in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It is one of the world's largest coal export terminals, handling primarily thermal coal destined for international markets. The terminal is operated by Transnet Port Terminals, a division of South African state-owned logistics company Transnet. Richards Bay Coal Terminal serves as a critical export gateway for South African coal producers, shipping coal to customers in Asia, Europe and other regions. The facility has a nameplate capacity of around 91-million tonnes a year, though actual throughput varies with demand, rail performance and operational conditions. Coal is delivered to the terminal by rail from mines in South Africa's interior coalfields, then stockpiled and loaded onto bulk carriers for export. The terminal plays a significant role in South Africa's economy, supporting mining employment and generating foreign exchange through coal exports. Richards Bay Coal Terminal was commissioned in 1976 and has undergone several expansions to increase capacity and improve efficiency over the decades.
