Red Lake

Red Lake is a city in northwestern Ontario, Canada, situated about 535 km northwest of Thunder Bay. The city serves as a regional centre for one of Canada's most productive gold mining districts, with a population of approximately 4 000 people. Red Lake's economy has historically been dominated by hard-rock gold mining, with operations dating back to the 1920s that have produced millions of ounces of gold from high-grade deposits. The city is located within the Red Lake greenstone belt, a geological formation known for its rich mineral endowment that extends beyond gold to include lithium, copper and other critical minerals. In recent years, Red Lake has attracted exploration and development activity in the lithium sector, positioning the region as a potential source of battery metals for the electric vehicle supply chain. The city is accessible by road via Highway 105 and by air through the Red Lake Airport, which provides essential connectivity for mining operations and the local community. Red Lake's infrastructure includes services and facilities that support both the resident population and the transient workforce associated with mining projects. The municipal government works closely with mining companies, Indigenous communities and provincial authorities to balance economic development with environmental stewardship and community well-being. Red Lake was officially incorporated in 1960, consolidating several mining camps and settlements that had grown up around the gold discoveries of the early twentieth century.
