Port Of Richards Bay

The Port of Richards Bay is a deep-water harbour on the north-east coast of South Africa in KwaZulu-Natal province, approximately 180 km north of Durban. It is one of the largest and busiest ports in Africa, handling predominantly bulk cargo including coal, minerals, agricultural products and petroleum. The port is home to the Richards Bay Coal Terminal, the world's largest coal export facility, which has historically accounted for the majority of throughput. Other key terminals include facilities for handling magnetite, phosphoric acid, woodchips and liquid fuels. The port is operated by Transnet National Ports Authority, the state-owned ports regulator and landlord. Richards Bay serves as a critical gateway for South African and regional exports, particularly from the mining and agricultural sectors, and supports significant industrial activity in the surrounding Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone. The harbour's deep draught and modern infrastructure enable it to accommodate large bulk carriers and Panamax vessels. The port has been the focus of expansion and diversification initiatives, including proposals for liquefied natural gas import terminals and gas-to-power projects to support South Africa's energy transition. It was established in the 1970s as part of a national strategy to develop export capacity for coal and other minerals.
