Platreef

Platreef is a large-scale platinum-group metals mining project located near Mokopane in Limpopo province, South Africa. The project is owned and operated by Ivanplats, a subsidiary of Ivanhoe Mines, and sits within the northern limb of the Bushveld Igneous Complex. Platreef hosts a significant resource of platinum, palladium, rhodium, nickel, copper and gold within a thick, flat-lying orebody that extends over several kilometres. The deposit is notable for its scale and the presence of multiple valuable metals, which enhances its economic viability compared with conventional platinum-only operations. Platreef is being developed as an underground mine with planned shaft infrastructure and processing facilities designed to handle large tonnages. The project has attracted international investment, including from Japanese partners such as Itochu, Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation and Japan Gas Corporation through the ITC Platinum Development joint venture. Engineering and technical studies have been conducted by firms including DRA Global, SRK Consulting, WSP and United Mining Services. Platreef is located in proximity to Anglo Platinum's Mogalakwena mine, benefiting from established regional infrastructure. The project is expected to become one of the world's lowest-cost producers of platinum-group metals once in full operation. Platreef's development is aligned with South Africa's broad-based black economic empowerment framework and represents a cornerstone asset for Ivanplats and Ivanhoe Mines in the global platinum-group metals sector.
