Patrice Motsepe

Patrice Motsepe is a South African mining magnate, businessman and billionaire who serves as executive chairperson of African Rainbow Minerals (ARM), a diversified mining and minerals company. He is widely recognised as one of Africa's wealthiest individuals and the first black African billionaire to appear on the Forbes list. Motsepe founded ARM in 1997, building it into a major player in South African mining with interests in platinum, ferrous metals, coal, copper and gold. The company holds significant stakes in operations including Two Rivers platinum mine and Assmang, a chrome and manganese producer. Beyond mining, he chairs Ubuntu-Botho Investments and holds interests in financial services, energy and real estate. Motsepe is also president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), a position he has held since 2021, and owns Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club, one of South Africa's most successful football teams. He is known for his philanthropic work through the Motsepe Foundation, which focuses on education, health and social development across Africa. His business career began in the legal profession before he moved into mining contracting in the 1990s, acquiring marginal gold mine shafts from AngloGold and turning them profitable. Motsepe's influence extends across African business, sport and civil society, making him a recurring figure in coverage of mining, investment and continental development.
