Para

Pará is a state in northern Brazil, with its capital at Belém. It is the second-largest Brazilian state by area and sits within the Amazon basin, encompassing vast tracts of rainforest alongside significant mineral and agricultural resources. The state's economy is anchored by mining, particularly iron ore, bauxite, gold and copper, as well as timber, cattle ranching and agribusiness. Principal cities include Belém, a major port on the Atlantic coast, and Marabá, an inland mining and logistics hub. Pará hosts some of Brazil's most important mining operations, including the Carajás iron ore complex, and has emerged as a focus for gold exploration and production, notably in the Tapajós region. The state government operates under Brazil's federal system, with an elected governor and legislative assembly. Pará's strategic position at the mouth of the Amazon river and its resource endowment make it central to Brazil's export economy and a recurring subject in coverage of mining, infrastructure and environmental policy. The state was established in its modern form in the nineteenth century, inheriting colonial-era boundaries, and has seen successive waves of resource development and settlement.
