Mozal

Mozal is an aluminium smelter located in Maputo province, Mozambique, approximately 20 km west of the capital city. The facility is operated by Mozal SARL, a joint venture in which South32 holds a 47.1% stake, Mitsubishi Corporation holds 25%, the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa holds 24%, and the Mozambique government holds 3.9%. Mozal is one of the largest aluminium smelters in sub-Saharan Africa, with an annual production capacity of approximately 560 000 tonnes of primary aluminium. The smelter uses electrolytic reduction technology to convert alumina into aluminium metal, drawing on Mozambique's abundant and relatively low-cost hydroelectric power from the Cahora Bassa dam. Mozal's output is primarily exported to international markets, making it a significant contributor to Mozambique's export earnings and industrial economy. The facility employs several thousand people directly and supports a broader supply chain in the region. Mozal was commissioned in two phases, with the first potline starting production in 2000 and the second phase completed in 2003, doubling the smelter's capacity. The project represented one of the largest foreign direct investments in Mozambique's post-independence history and remains a cornerstone of the country's industrial base.
