Mossel Bay

Mossel Bay is a coastal city in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It sits on the Garden Route, approximately 400 km east of Cape Town, and serves as both a commercial harbour and a popular tourist destination. The city has a population of around 90 000 people in its municipal area. Mossel Bay is a significant industrial and energy hub, home to the PetroSA gas-to-liquids refinery and offshore natural gas production facilities in the Bredasdorp Basin. The port handles petroleum products, fishing vessels and general cargo, and is an important base for maritime operations along the southern Cape coast. The city's economy is anchored by petroleum refining, fishing, tourism and light manufacturing. Mossel Bay also hosts the Port of Mossel Bay, which falls under the jurisdiction of the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) and plays a role in regional maritime safety and logistics. The area has historical significance as the site where Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias first landed in South Africa in 1488. Mossel Bay's strategic location and energy infrastructure make it a recurring focus in coverage of South Africa's oil and gas sector, maritime transport and coastal development.
