Mineral Exploration

Mineral exploration is the systematic search for economically viable mineral deposits beneath the Earth's surface. The activity encompasses geological surveys, geochemical sampling, geophysical measurements and drilling programmes designed to identify and delineate ore bodies containing metals, industrial minerals or gemstones. Exploration companies and mining groups invest in these activities to discover new resources that can be developed into producing mines. The process typically progresses through stages of increasing detail and cost, from initial reconnaissance and target generation through to resource definition and feasibility studies. Mineral exploration is capital-intensive and high-risk, with only a small fraction of prospects advancing to production. Key techniques include remote sensing, airborne and ground geophysics, soil and rock sampling, trenching and diamond or reverse-circulation drilling. The sector is driven by commodity prices, technological advances in detection methods and access to prospective geological terrains. Successful exploration underpins the global mining industry by replenishing reserves depleted by production. In Africa, mineral exploration targets a wide range of commodities including gold, copper, platinum-group metals, diamonds, uranium, iron ore and base metals, supported by the continent's diverse and richly mineralised geology. Regulatory frameworks, infrastructure availability and political stability influence exploration activity and investment flows across different jurisdictions.
