Kalgoorlie

Kalgoorlie is a city in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, about 595 km east of Perth. It is one of Australia's most significant gold-mining centres and serves as the economic and administrative hub of the state's inland mining industry. The city merged with the neighbouring town of Boulder in 1989 to form the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, though Kalgoorlie remains the commonly used name. The population of the combined urban area is approximately 30 000 people, making it the largest settlement in the Goldfields region. Kalgoorlie's economy is dominated by gold mining, with numerous active mines and processing facilities in the surrounding area, including the Super Pit, one of the largest open-cut gold mines in the world. The city also supports a range of mining services, equipment suppliers and exploration companies. Its infrastructure includes an airport, rail connections to Perth and a network of roads serving remote mining operations across the region. Kalgoorlie was founded in 1893 following the discovery of gold by Paddy Hannan, and the ensuing gold rush established it as a permanent settlement and a cornerstone of Western Australia's mining heritage.
