Indiana

Indiana is a state in the Midwestern United States. Its capital is Indianapolis, which also serves as the state's largest city and a major economic centre. The state has a population of about 6.8-million people and covers an area of approximately 94 000 km². Indiana's economy is anchored by manufacturing, particularly automotive production, with major assembly plants operated by companies including Stellantis, Toyota and Honda. The state is also a significant producer of steel, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, alongside a strong agricultural sector focused on maize and soybean cultivation. Indiana shares borders with Michigan to the north, Ohio to the east, Kentucky to the south and Illinois to the west. The state's strategic location within the Great Lakes region and its extensive transport infrastructure, including the Port of Indiana on Lake Michigan, support its role as a logistics and distribution hub. Indiana operates under a bicameral General Assembly and has historically been a competitive state in national elections. The state was admitted to the Union in 1816 as the nineteenth state, following a period of rapid settlement and development in the early nineteenth century.
