Husab

Husab is a large-scale uranium mine located in the Erongo region of Namibia, approximately 60 kilometres inland from the coastal town of Swakopmund. The mine is operated by Swakop Uranium, a subsidiary of China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN), through its CNNC Overseas arm. Husab is one of the world's largest uranium mines by production capacity, with nameplate capacity of approximately 15-million pounds of uranium oxide (U₃O₈) a year. The deposit sits within the Namib Desert and forms part of Namibia's uranium-rich Erongo region, which hosts several significant uranium projects. Commercial production at Husab commenced in late 2016, following a construction phase that began in 2013. The mine employs conventional open-pit mining methods, with ore processed through a conventional crushing, milling and leaching circuit. Husab represents a strategic asset for China's nuclear energy programme, securing long-term uranium supply for CGN's reactor fleet. The mine has contributed significantly to Namibia's position as one of Africa's leading uranium producers and a top-five global supplier. Husab's development marked one of the largest foreign direct investments in Namibian history, with capital expenditure exceeding $5-billion during construction.
