Greenland

Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Its capital is Nuuk. With a population of about 56 000, it is the world's least densely populated territory, though it is the largest island on Earth by area. The economy is heavily dependent on fishing and fish processing, which account for the majority of exports, alongside substantial annual subsidies from Denmark. Greenland holds significant untapped mineral resources, including rare earths, lithium, uranium, zinc, lead, gold and iron ore, which have attracted growing international interest as global demand for critical minerals intensifies. The territory's vast ice sheet and remote geography present logistical and environmental challenges to resource development, though melting ice has improved access to some deposits. Greenland gained home rule in 1979 and expanded self-government in 2009, giving it control over most domestic affairs, including natural resources, while Denmark retains responsibility for foreign affairs and defence. The government has sought to balance economic development, particularly in mining, with environmental protection and the interests of indigenous Inuit communities. Greenland uses the Danish krone as its currency. The territory is not a member of the European Union, having withdrawn in 1985, but maintains special arrangements with the bloc.

COOL RECEPTION: US President Donald Trump has been unable to keep his story straight as to why America should be allowed to acquire Greenland. Is it for security reasons? Is it for the vast territory’s untapped critical minerals? Is he acting on a grievance related to not being awarded the 2025 Peace Prize? Or is he seeking to distract from political pressures at home? Whatever the real reason, Trump’s aggressive posture has received a reception from key allies that is cooler than a winter’s day on the Arctic island. Photograph: Bloomberg
