Gécamines

Gécamines is the State-owned mining company of the Democratic Republic of Congo and one of the world's historically significant producers of copper and cobalt. The company is headquartered in Lubumbashi, in the copper-rich Katanga province of south-eastern DRC. Gécamines operates mines, processing facilities and related infrastructure across the Congolese Copperbelt, a geological zone that holds some of the planet's largest reserves of copper and cobalt. The company's ownership structure places it under the control of the Congolese government, which uses Gécamines as a vehicle for State participation in the country's mining sector. In recent decades Gécamines has entered into joint ventures and partnerships with international mining groups to develop and operate major deposits, often retaining minority stakes while ceding operational control to private-sector partners. The company also engages in mineral trading through subsidiaries. Gécamines has faced persistent challenges including ageing infrastructure, financial difficulties, governance concerns and disputes over contract terms with joint-venture partners. Despite these issues, it remains a central actor in the DRC's mining industry and a key supplier of cobalt, a critical mineral for battery production. Gécamines was established in 1967 following the nationalisation of the Belgian-controlled Union Minière du Haut Katanga, and for many years it was the backbone of the Congolese economy.
